TropMed Pharma Consulting
TropMed Pharma Consulting specialises in advising companies, academic institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and governmental and intergovernmental organisations working on malaria and neglected tropical diseases to help them be more successful.
The challenges in this field are often different from those faced by projects in other areas of medicine. Most projects in this area are carried out in the form of public-private partnerships (PPPs) or product development partnerships (PDPs). The involvement of many different parties from the public and private spheres, with different objectives, skill sets, and expertise can raise challenges that have often not been experienced before by the organisations involved.
Ian Boulton (Managing Director) brings more than 30 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry and over 10 years working in this field to meeting TropMed Pharma Consulting’s Mission. He has been involved in many public-private partnerships and so has experiences (good and bad) to draw on and inform the advice to our clients.
How we can help
- Late Stage Development & Deployment Planning:
Target clients: pharmaceutical companies, especially small and medium sized ones, and other organisations developing new drugs to treat malaria and other neglected tropical diseases.
Working with our clients to develop appropriate development and deployment plans for, taking into account the particular challenges of working in these disease areas.
- R&D Strategic Planning:
Target clients: pharmaceutical companies, especially small and medium sized ones, and other organisations developing new drugs to treat malaria and other neglected tropical diseases.
Working with our clients to develop robust strategies to govern their work in the discovery, development, and deployment of new drugs.
- Building Partnerships:
Target clients: private and public sector organisations who are or who wish to collaborate on the development and deployment of new drugs and other interventions to control, eliminate, or eradicate malaria and other neglected tropical diseases.
Helping our clients to establish new collaborations, ensuring that all parties understand the priorities of the other parties, that joint plans meet the expectations of all parties, trouble-shooting existing partnerships if problems occur, and ensuring that overall the collaboration is a “win-win” situation for all concerned.
- Good Management Practice:
Target Clients: public sector organisations and other groups active in the control, elimination, and eradication of malaria and other neglected tropical diseases.
Bringing private sector methods and disciplines to our clients’ operations. The objective is to make it easier and more effective for them to utilise effectively the funds being made available to them through funding bodies like the Gates Foundation or OECD Governments.
Our Method
We aim to work with our clients in a collaborative manner to develop solutions that are properly bought in by all concerned. No two projects or assignments will be the same. However our starting point is usually the following process:-

Our Principles
- Listen: it is only by listening to our clients that we can really understand the challenges they are facing.
- Clarity: take the time, especially at the start of a project (often before contracting) to clearly define the challenge
- Partnership: work with our clients, not impose “cookie-cutter” solutions. Where possible, work with a team of our client’s staff, not work in isolation.
- Buy-in: ensure that the people who will be affected by the action plan buy-into the recommendations and the plan.
- Flexibility: adapt our approach to our client’s circumstances to ensure the recommendations and plan have the best chance of success.
